I've been a soviet medal collector for circa 15 years, albeit not so much recently.

Your award group #17 caught my interest, especially the
RB 5th award. It doesn't match Durov's type 4 var 1, which
he maintains was the only #5 produced.

Your example appears to be a type 5, not sure on the variant, but monetnyj dvor on two lines.

What's the story on this RB #5 type 5? Is it genuine?

My interest is more than academic, as I have four RB #5's,
2 of each type, 2 in groups, coincidentally, both pilots.
And one of the my single pieces reseaches to yet another
pilot.

I have looked on the internet for any information on this
RB #5 type, but no luck.

Any information you could provide would be appreciated.

Thanks
Stan Knipp

I have a medal which is identical to the irreproachable service in the armed forces of the USSR 20 years. Even the text on the back is the same. But the medal is a gold color, with a red star. I cant find it described anywhere. Have you ever heard of one of these?

hi there!
great site, very informative! i know you're probably want to avoid ebay like the plague but theres a defence of sevastopol medal on there at the minute (today is 04/10/08) its auction number is: 230288817639 and it looks quite original to me. i noticed you are looking for one but going off the prices you have published on this site i think its massively overpriced! having said all that though, im wondering if the chernobyl cleanup medal that the same guy is selling is real (the enamal looks wrong to me as does the bar holding the ribbon!) anyway, i thought i'd let you know so you can at least have a look!
kind regards
min

Hello, thanks for the nice words. As to determining authenticity from a scan, especially from ebay, impossible. You have odds on chances of buying a very good forgery unless you take from a reputable orders trader (see my links). My prices are on the low side, I have not updated them recently..for example order of Lenin with document from Armemia did not seel twice as the reserve price was not met (highest bid was under 2300 USD). The Chernobyl will be original, they were not faked, its not even an official medal anyway.

I have been collecting Soviet era items since I spent several years in Moscow and surrounding parts beginning in 1992. It is a hobby that I can only afford to indulge in on periodically since I am only a lowly professor. I have a wish list now that includes a medal For Distinguished Military Service 1st class (though I see you don't have one up for exchange). However, should you come across one, what would be a fair price? At the same time, I did notice a Service to the Motherland and Friendship of Peoples. These are also on my list. Now I don't have much to exchange with other than a couple of R* and R8 items that I can't part with because they were given to me personally by the owner. However, I've been to your website many times and though I've never inquired about buying something directly, it appears to me that you are not the eBay money-grubbing type so I can trust that you would only ask a fair price.
Please let me know what you think and should you want photos of the items I can't let go, I will be happy to take pictures and forward them to you.
Thank you in advance,
Phillip

Hi Luke, these are all badges, not really fo interest to medals collectors, they were made from light alloys in massive series, unless very old, usually worth a few pence as they say. Of course collectors of badges look at them differently, there are catalogues that list some of the more valuable one's but I do not have them...sorry oa

Thanks for the very informative site. I'm a WWImedal-collector and I was thinking about getting into Sovjet awards as well. But after getting a lot of reports on extremely rising prices and fakes I think I'll pass. Seems like Sovjet awards will go the same way as German WWII-awards: market flooded with fakes thus originals only collectable at higher prices for a smaller number of collectors...

Yes counterfeits are a problem...what can one say...

Hi!

I am a part-time collector, and am looking for several medals that I had difficulty finding when living in Lviv, Ukraine and Krakow, Poland this past summer. I am seeking to add to my collection the Defence of Kiev medal as well as the defence of Sevestapol and the Defence of Stalingrad. I fully understand the problem with fakes with both Belgrade, Odessa and Sevestapol, but I would also eventually like to add Belgrade...I quite literally have all of the other cities. Do you have Kiev, Belgrade and Sevestapol and how much would you ask for them? (I am not concerned with variation, just that they are in mint good condition and real). Thanks

Ryan

Hi Ryan, sorry I do not sell at all basically, I need to enlarge my collection! oa

Hello, I wasrecetly in Russia and bought what looks to be authentic, The Order Of The Red Banner. Could youtell me some marks to look for to see if its authentic or not. Also where would i beable to purchase a NKVD or GRU badge?

Thanks
----------------
Send me a goo scan will try to advise you, but there are several variations and much depends on the serial number. NKVD and GRU badges are heavily faked but you can still get them fairly easily in Ukraine or Moldova, or from US dealers, I would not risk ebay. oa
